Kate was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic Leukemia when she was two, she is sixteen now and it is still hibernating underneath her skin. Anna is thirteen and was specifically born to keep her sister Kate alive. Everyone in the family has their own specific roles, Kate plays the Martyr, Jesse, the oldest brother, is the Lost Cause, and Anna is the Peacekeeper.
Anna is starting to grow up and question why she was even born in the first place. She has already undergone numerous surgeries and transfusions and it seems to her that she was only born for her sisters life.
In the end of chapter one, Anna decides to visit a lawyer, Alexander Campbell, he ignores her and treats her as a child untill she tells him " I want to sue my parents for the rights to my own body."
